Champagne is forever

Deep inside the champagne houses, there’s more than endless cold, damp tunnels suitable for aging the beverage. Every 2 years at Millésima, some 1,000 visitors discover the house’s long history in a orchestrated tasting, an opportunity to discover the nuances between the different cuvées and the different maisons, all in one place. This year the « Panorama Champagne » will take place in Bordeaux at the Matmut Atlantique Stadium on the 7th of November, from 6 to 10pm, where 24 maisons will present more than 90 cuvées. Let’s focus on two of them. Tickets avalable here : event.millesima.fr (your promo code at the end of this post) Laurent Perrier : The shadow of a great man still looms over the house of Laurent-Perrier in Tours-sur-Marne. Bernard de Nonancourt, an early member of the French Resistance, set out to revive a house that was in ruins following World War II, turning it into the fourth-ranking champagne group—Salon and Delamotte included—thanks to his innovations and the timeless quality of his wines. He was the first to market a non-vintage rosé brut (1968) …

Adesso so’ di aver avuto ragione.

Aging with grace

The atypical yet complex and subtle signature of Charles Heidsieck Champagnes develops over a period of years. The unique aging process does its work patiently, underground. For the Champagne house, a great wine demands the finest grape varieties, grapes that are picked just at the right moment, and plenty of time. This approach has been integral to the identity of the wines that the house has been producing since 1851 ; the heir to the company, Charles-Camille Heidsieck, chose to acquire Gallo- Roman chalk pits, where the humidity and temperature levels were constant. The chalk pits offer the ideal environment for the Champagnes to mature, allowing the emphasis to be on quality rather than quantity. “The house has chosen the diffcult option: 40 percent of what we produce is stored to ensure it reaches its full potential by the time it is opened,”explains Cyril Brun, chief cellarman at Charles Heidsieck. “In our cellars, the bottles are on average five years old.”That’s the age of maturity for these Champagnes, which acquire a variety of complex aromas, with …

Heidsieck, the globetrotting dandy Champagne for this Christmas

A legend cannot be built on sand. The “Maison” of Charles Heidsieck understands this. Its president has therefore revived a somewhat forgotten legend, the man who was one of the first to introduce his wines to the New World. Known to Americans as “Champagne Charlie”, he first crossed the Atlantic in 1852 with chestfuls of bottles to convince Americans of the superiority of his wines. For the 2014 Holiday season, the house is reissuing three of these maple-wood truncks. The most prestigious, the Malle 1852 Oenothèque, contains six bottles of the iconic Brut Réserve, six of the Rosé Réserve, six of the legendary Blanc des Millénaires 1995, and three of each of the rare 1983 and 1985 vintages, along with a Riedel decanter and flutes, and a writing kit (5 000€). This ends the hunting Christmas gift season with a fantasmagoric phenomena to be captured by eye and mouth, with effects of relief and touch, a master of the cantilevered construction that mobilizes all the possibilities of space. If this sinfully “malle” lands under your Christmas tree, there’s …
